Have you ever experienced so severe internet-lag while playing games that you wanted to throw your computer out of the window? It's a great time to perform a speed check for the ping. Though not every game needs lightning-fast speeds, it’s worth keeping a close eye on one key metric: ping. And if you don’t know what ping is and what it is used for, just have a peace of mind. In this article, we’re going to give you basic knowledge of this key metric.speed-check-understanding-ping-results

Speed check: Understanding Ping Results

Run a speed check first

Running an Internet speed test gives you a good sense of your Internet speed, thus making sure you are spending a good chunk of your hard-earned money on your Internet service provider. In a nutshell, you are advised to periodically do Internet speed check to ensure what you get is worth the money. When you’re doing a speed test, you’ll see three key metrics appear. One of them is Ping.

In order to check delays between your computer and a server, you can use a quick speed testing tool which gives you a quick view of how you perform at that moment. There is a ton of tools in the market, so you should find no trouble picking the best one.

Our service, MySpeed, is one of the most reliable speed check tools that allow you to test your Internet speed (download speed, upload speed, ping speed) anywhere, anytime within a few seconds. By using it, you can have a more comprehensive picture of how fast your connections are, identify the problems to the slow Internet, and solutions for better speed.

Our speed test is dedicated to providing accurate results to truly gauge the bandwidth performance at your location. You are able to get the best results on different devices without any app download.

Another good option is The SpeedOf.me, which measures latency measurement, and if you'd like, SpeedSmart's speed test also lets you know the ping to servers all over the world.

What is Ping?

Ping is the amount of time spent on sending data from an originating host to a destination computer and vice versus. It is measured in milliseconds (ms). Contrary to downloading and uploading, the lower the ping value is, the better.

The ping value gets high when the other device is far away or the network is overload. This value is incredibly meant to online game players who wish to get a quick response from the server to ensure they have a fast and smooth experience. What can tell if your connection is good or bad? Get to know ping by doing a speed check.

What is a good ping?

As a rule of thumb, it should be nice for you to do all kinds of activities if your ping speed is less than 50 ms. However, if the number is more than that, chances are you will experience lag online. The ping value of less than 40 ms is considered a relatively fast ping. And a very good ping is within the range of 0 to 10 ms.

Understand  ping results through a speed check

In gaming, a ping of below 20 ms is deemed exceptional while anything 50 ms or more is less expected and regarded high ping as it could lead to lag. The number a good to average ping is within the range of 50 ms to 100 ms.

For a more stable internet and lower ping, we highly recommend a fiber-optic connection and regularly run speed check for better insights into your Internet connections.

Why ping is important?

The purpose of running a ping test is to know if you can communicate with another computer and if there is any internet interruption between the two devices.

In another case, your website is kinda slow, so you’re encouraged to run a ping test to check the response time of websites and servers from different locations across the world.

What does "time=80ms" mean? What is a good ping time?

After doing the speed check, you get the Ping of 80ms, which means the measured time that the last packet took to get to the destination. In this case, 80 milliseconds is equal to 0.08 seconds. So you'd need to achieve a 1000ms reply before your packet is delayed 1 second.

There is no standard time for ping as it depends on what you're trying to do. If you're playing an online multiplayer game, a ping of more than 100ms (0.1 seconds) could bring you danger because it’s possible that other players have can see what is happening in the game a bit quicker than you. Also, you experience a lag in which your actions are delay, which leads to…Guess what? Yes, you’re a loser!

Just imagine you’re engrossed in an intense game of sports match and you’re just a few points from winning. You take the final shot and suddenly your game freezes, making your shot happen a few seconds later. As a result, your peer took the shot first and you’ve failed to get the crown just because of the game lag. How terrible!

Performing a speed check to know how good the ping is

Regrading websites and servers, if you are streaming videos from your website, a low ping time to your server is desirable as the transmission of data would not be delayed. However, if you have a simple text website with optimized images, higher ping times of 400 to 500ms can still be up to snuff. In order not to be interrupted while working or playing, you should make sure your connection is good enough by running a speed check. It just takes you less than one minute to complete the task and you’ll know whether your internet connection is good or bad.

Factors affecting Ping results

The ping test results are strongly affected by how many routers on the path between your computer and the server. Routers take the job of transmitting data from the source host to the target IP address. The longer the delay created by the distance between two routers, the higher ping is.

If you get higher ping values after doing a speed check, then the possibility is that there are so many routers, links, or servers. The received packets are stored in the buffer and processed on a first-come, first-served basis. When the server can’t process all packets on time, it’s time the overload happens. And as a result, the packet is unexpectedly stored in the buffer for a longer time.

Wrapping up

So, you’ve known basic information about Ping and what can you do about it. Ping gives you a view of how good your connection is. Make sure to do a speed check before getting yourself into an online game to know whether ping speed is good enough unless you’ll end up with game lag.
