Internet speed and online gaming

Online gaming is always one of the online activities that a lot of us love to enjoy.

Of course, one of the first and foremost conditions to enjoy the game is the Internet.

You need a good enough connection to be a part of the game.

Remember that this connection needs to be good enough for playing games.

Without sufficient Internet bandwidth and speed, it’s hard for us to enjoy the gameplay smoothly and properly.

However, it’s not always essential to play games with a fast connection.

Yep, you read it right!

In actuality, one of the popular myths about the Internet for online gaming is that players need to have a high-speed connection.

Why is it considered a myth?

Is 10 Mbps download speed good for gaming?

Keep reading on, and then you will understand why the requirement for fast Internet for playing games is just a myth.

Here we go!

How fast is 10 Mbps?

Although it's not much, it's still better than nothing.

That most likely sums up 10 Mbps the best.

Despite that, even with a package that offers 10 Mbps download and 1 or 2 Mbps upload, you can still do a lot of things.

For leisurely web browsing, email checking, video conversations, music streaming, etc a download speed of 10 Mbps is sufficient.

You can do many things at a 10 Mbps download speed

The standard recommendation speed for HD video streaming (1080p) is often 5 Mbps.

So, if your Internet speed is 10 Mbps, you can simultaneously stream HD videos to two devices.

However, you can't stream 4K at 10 Mbps because that requires 16–25 Mbps (depending on the streaming platform).

What is a good download speed?

Well, different types of games require different Internet speeds.

The following are recommended speeds for FPS, RPG, MMO, and Real-time strategy games.

Let’s see what is good download and upload speed for gaming:

From this picture, we can easily see that a 10 Mbps download speed is sufficient for MMO, Real-time Strategy, and RPG games.

To experience FPS games smoothly, you’ll need a higher speed.

Common myths about Internet speed for gaming

Following are 4 common myths about the Internet for gaming that you might not know.

Let’s check it out now.!

Myth 1: Gaming requires a high-speed Internet connection

Many Internet users think that playing online games requires very high speed and bandwidth, but it’s not true.

If the ping is too high and download and upload speeds are way slow, your current connection can’t offer you a good gaming experience.

But, speed and bandwidth are not everything

Yep, they are not everything.

Along with these, other factors are also affecting online gameplays, such as:

  • The number of devices connected to the network at a time

  • The online activities that these devices are performing

  • The ping or latency when connecting to game servers all directly affect the games.

In fact, speed recommendations for a lot of games these days are between 10 and 20 Mbps (megabits per second).

It’s considered an average speed range, not a high Internet connection speed.

The download speed for most games is between 10 - 20 Mbps

Myth 2: Playing games consumes lots of Internet data

In fact, it just requires very little data during the gameplay.

That’s also the reason why you don’t need very fast Internet for playing games like mentioned above.

Instead, downloading new games, and updating game patches use a lot more data than just gaming.

If you are not careful, downloading new games or patches can eat through your data, especially when it comes to heavy games or large game patches.

If you are getting new games frequently, you may want high data capacities or high Internet bandwidth.

Myth 3: You can do nothing to fix lags or glitches

There are various reasons for in-game lags such as software and hardware issues, problems with the Internet connection, and more.

Among that, the route your Internet Service Provider is taking to the game server is also the popular cause for lagging.

However, the connection might encounter congestion along the way, leading to lags in games.

If that’s the main reason for lags or glitches in your gameplay, you can fix this issue by finding a more optimal route that can better handle more congestion.

Better broadband can help you resolve this problem.

Similarly, if the reason for causing lags is due to your hardware or software, you also need to fix it by doing some upgrades, for example.

As long as you find the actual causes of lagging, you will know to troubleshoot the problems.

Myth 4: Wireless connections aren’t okay for online gaming

We all know that wired connections are faster and more stable than wireless connections.

The wireless signal travels through the air that can be interfered with and gets weakened by different factors.

Meanwhile, the wired one offers higher and stable speeds with no interference.

In other words, wireless connections seem not reliable for online gaming due to disrupted and congested airwaves.

So, if you can eliminate or minimize internal and external factors affecting your wireless signal strength, it’s okay to play games via wireless connections.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
1. Is 10 Mbps good for cloud gaming?

To stream games in 720p quality using Google Stadia, Nvidia's GeForce Now, Sony's PlayStation Now, and Microsoft's xCloud, you need at least 15 Mbps.

That’s the minimum Internet connection for cloud gaming.

Luckily, xCloud only needs at least 10 Mbps.

2. Is 10 Mbps fast enough for 4K?

Unfortunately, the answer is no.

A connection speed of at least 25 Mbps is required to stream a 4K video for the best possible image on a 4K smart TV.

Lower-resolution content requires less bandwidth, but even streaming 1080p HD video smoothly calls for a 10 Mbps plan.

3. Is 10 Mbps enough for two people?

Well, for an individual working from home, you’ll need a dedicated Internet bandwidth with a minimum of 10 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload.

That much Internet speed makes it possible to use several connections simultaneously without experiencing any hiccups.

So, 10 Mbps is not sufficient for two people.

Conclusion

As you can see, we don’t need a very fast Internet connection to play games, right? As long as your Internet performance meets the requirements for the games, you can play them smoothly. Remember that ping rate/latency matters to the games more than the speeds.

We hope the information above is helpful! That’s all for this post on Is 10 Mbps download speed good for gaming? Want to know what is a good Internet speed for PS4, and Xbox...? check our upcoming articles!

Is a 30 Mbps download and 30 Mbps upload speed good enough for a competitive Fortnite player? What actually matters to give you an advantage when it comes to internet connection?

Yes, it should be. Most online games don’t need a lot of bandwidth. What you need to have is low latency. It doesn’t matter if you have 1Gbps up and down if you are getting pings of 300

Is 25 mbps enough or should I update it? I don't play too much games except for Minecraft and some Battle Royale type games.

It's enough. Ping (ms) is the real issue you have to worry about. If you have 20ms then you're perfectly set. If you constantly get between 90ms-110ms then... It's a bit of an issue

Will a VPN & 100 Mbps Internet package work for Fortnite? My family is moving to Pine Ridge Rez. My son is freaking out because he won't be able to play his friends in Fortnite. Will 100 Mbps and get a gaming VPN and connect to where his friends play?

Hi, 100 Mbps doesn't matter. Fortnite uses less than 0.25 Mbps. What matters is latency. In North America, any decent provider other than satellites should work fine

How do you reduce lag in Fortnite? I have a good PC well above minimum specs but my net speed is only 4 Mbps download speed and 0.50 Mbps upload speed.

That is very low, especially the upload speed. You need to have a good latency(or ping) to play lag free online games
