Certain criteria point to X's situation getting worse, according to data from two research firms and numbers released by Musk and X.

Although Musk has positioned it as the world's "town square," it still has a significantly smaller population of users than its video-focused social media competitors, like Instagram and TikTok.

San Francisco-based market research company Sensor Tower reported that in February, X had 27 million daily active users of its mobile app in the US, an 18% decrease from the same month last year.

According to Sensor Tower, since November 2022—the first full month that Musk owned the app—the U.S. user base has been stagnant or declining every month, lowering by 23% overall.

On the other hand, the study also found that other social media apps had slight growth in their global user bases during the same period.

Snapchat grew by 8.8%, Instagram by 5.3%, Facebook by 1.5%, and TikTok by 0.5%.

According to a study analysis by Abe Yousef, a senior insights analyst at Sensor Tower, "user frustration over flagrant content, general platform technical issues, and the growing threat of short-form video platforms may have driven the reduction in X mobile app active users."
