Apple Offers $100 Million to Overturn Indonesia's iPhone 16 Ban
According to people familiar with the case, Apple Inc. has nearly tenfold boosted its investment offer in Indonesia in its latest push to persuade the government to overturn the iPhone 16 sales restriction.
The idea would see Cupertino-based Apple invest about $100 million in Southeast Asia's largest economy over two years, according to the sources.
Apple's prior investment plan of around $10 million would have included the company investing in an accessory and component facility in Bandung, southeast of Jakarta, stated by Bloomberg News.
Apple offers $100 million to lift Indonesia's iPhone 16 ban
Following Apple's increased offer, Indonesia's Ministry of Industry, which last month denied a permit to sell the iPhone 16, is now demanding that the technology behemoth change its investment plans to focus more on research and development for its smartphones in the country.
The Ministry of Industry has yet to make a final judgment on Apple's latest proposal, they noted.
Following Apple's original proposal, the government requested that senior corporate officials meet with Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita.
However, after flying into Jakarta, Apple's senior executives were informed that the minister was unavailable and that they would have to meet with the ministry's director-general instead.
Neither Apple nor the Ministry of Industry responded to requests for comment.
