According to reports from the region, a Chinese-owned ship has been suspected of destroying an undersea internet cable connecting Taiwan to outlying islands after suspicions of China cutting a similar cable in Europe's Baltic Sea just weeks before.

Taiwan's Coast Guard reported in a notice that the cable was destroyed Friday in waters off the island's northern shore, according to the state-owned Central News Agency in Taipei.

Taiwanese officials informed the Taipei Times that the cable cut was caused by Chinese sabotage.

The cable interruption is the second involving Chinese ships in recent weeks. European officials believe a Chinese cargo damaged two undersea cables in the Baltic Sea in November, disrupting regional communications and prompting allegations of pro-Russian sabotage.

In fact, China is politically supporting Russia in its war in Ukraine, and the cable damage is claimed to be part of what military officials refer to as "gray zone" warfare attempts by Beijing to help its allies.

According to the Taiwan Coast Guard, Chunghwa Telecom, the island's largest service provider and cable owner, alleged that four cores of the cable were broken. Yet, the damage did not interfere with local Taiwanese communications.
